French school of the XVIIIth century, follower... - Lot 25 - SGL Enchères - Frédéric Laurent de Rummel et Peggy Savidan
French school of the XVIIIth century, follower of Pierre MIGNARD The Hymen of Zephir and Flora (Spring) and The Chariot of Bacchus and Ariadne (Autumn). Oil on canvas. 71 x 97 cm Gilded wood frame in the Louis XIV style. These two paintings are repeats of compositions by Pierre Mignard in the sense of engravings by Jean-Baptiste Poilly. These mythological allegories belonged to the series of Seasons, commissioned to the artist in 1677 by the Duke of Orleans for the decoration of the Gallery of Apollo at the Château de Saint-Cloud. The Musée du Louvre preserves the preparatory drawings and the Gobelins tapestries on these same subjects were woven in 1686 from cartoons by Pierre Mignard. The large formats were destroyed in 1870 in the fire of the castle. History : Sale of April 26, 1979 at the Palais d'Orsay, Claude Boisgirard and Axel de Heeckeren.
