Icon of Saint Modest and Saint Blaise. Russia, late 18th - e - Lot 155
Icon of Saint Modest and Saint Blaise. Russia, late 18th - early 19th century
Saint Modestus, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Saint Blaise, Bishop of Sebaste, are shown surmounted by Christ blessing. At their feet, a pastoral landscape crossed by a stream with oxen and a horse drinking. Upstream, a well poisoned by a guivre.
At the foot of the icon, a text narrating the miracle of Saint Modeste resuscitating the cattle that died from water contaminated by the guivre's poison.
Tempera on wood.
91 x 72 cm
By special decree of the Holy Synod, it was forbidden to depict Saint Modestus with cattle; such icons were removed from churches as non-canonical. Nevertheless, they were quite numerous, especially in Northern Russia, as Saint Modeste was considered in popular tradition to be the protector of domestic animals (very often named Medoste instead of Modeste). Saint Blaise is also the protector of livestock. They are frequently associated on icons.
