Paul JOUVE (1878-1973) The mountain of Athos,... - Lot 43 - SGL Enchères - Frédéric Laurent de Rummel et Peggy Savidan
Paul JOUVE (1878-1973) The mountain of Athos, August 1917. India ink, watercolor and pastel highlights signed Jouve lower left, located "the mountain of Athos seen from the monastery of Stravonikita" at the bottom left. 54 x 76 cm Mobilized with the Army of the East, Jouve was directly attached to the headquarters of the Army of the East commanded by General Sarrail. He spends 1916 in Salonika, where he organizes the exhibition of the artists of the Orient. On July 23, he embarked for the Athos peninsula and visited fourteen monasteries in turn. He transported his material on the back of a mule, staying a few days in each monastery where he was accommodated. He thus shared the life of the monks for two months, and marveled at the Byzantine treasures accumulated over the centuries. He brought back from his stay on Mount Athos paintings and drawings, of a striking strength and beauty. Staying at the monastery of Stravonikita, Jouve made this drawing in August 1917. Public collection: The Musée de l'Armée in Paris holds six drawings made on Mount Athos at this time. Provenance : Paul Jouve Collection, by inheritance.
