Icon of the Resurrection. Second half of the 19th century. - Lot 180
Icon of the Resurrection. Second half of the 19th century. The title on the upper border "Resurrection of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ" on either side of a representation of the Trinity of the New Testament. This icon is actually divided into two parts by a bar representing the ascent of the Righteous to Paradise, led by an angel preceding St. John the Forerunner, the Kings and the Prophets. On the vertical axis, above this bar of the Righteous, the Resurrection is surmounted by the Ascension and below, the Descent into Hell with Christ extending his hand to Adam and with Eve at his feet. This double main subject is accompanied by fourteen scenes, some of which are commented on in the border, others in the field itself (some scenes without explanatory text). Above the bar of the Righteous : Christ appearing to the disciples despite the locked doors (John 20-19), the Descent from the Cross, the Entombment, the Good Thief entering Paradise welcomed by Elijah and Enoch, the Good Thief in front of the door of Paradise topped by a cherub, then the procession of angels singing verse 7 of Psalm 23, the fright of the soldiers on guard (Matthew 28-4), the appearance of the Angel to the Myrophores, Satan beaten and thrown into Hell, Jesus breaking bread with Luke and Cleophas (Luke 24-30). Below the bar, Jesus giving the cross to the good thief, the miraculous catch of fish at Lake Tiberias (John 21-6), Jesus ordering the fish caught to be brought in (John 21-9), Jesus walking on the waters and holding out his hand to Saint Peter (Matthew 14-31). As is often the case, the explanatory texts are a more or less faithful adaptation of the original texts of the Gospels. These very complex compositions appeared in the seventeenth century and are considered to be from the Yaroslavl school. Tempera on wood with a barely marked kovcheg. 46 x 39.5 cm
