Paul JOUVE (1878-1973) - Lot 41
Paul JOUVE (1878-1973) Mosque and Hamma Cemetery in Algiers, 1908. Oil on wood panel, reinforced with two crosspieces screwed to the back. Signed, located and dated on the back. 60.5 x 39.5 cm In 1907, Jouve was the first recipient of the Orientalist grant awarded by the Algerian government. Along with Léon Cauvy, he became the first resident of the Villa Abd-el Tif in Algiers. He stayed there for two years. This oil painting was done on location in 1908, the mosque being located below the test garden right next to Jouve's studio. At the time, Jouve produced just three paintings on these rather unusual supports, made from a rough plank of wood, which he never used again. The other two paintings on this type of support depicted an Arab horseman, and the battleship "La démocratie" at anchor in the roadstead of Algiers, now in the collections of the Musée des années trente, Boulogne-Billancourt.
