A sloping secretary in butt-wood flower marquetry, in violet wood on a satin-finish background, all sides, with a curved form and decoration of flower scrolls in reserves, opening to a flap surrounded by a contoured doucine on three sides, the beveled belt extending to the front of the arched legs, the interior in flower marquetry containing three drawers, a large compartment and a sliding secret compartment; (lifts and misses; perhaps with original bronzes). Attributed to Bernard Van Riesen Burgh. Louis XV period. H: 83 cm - W: 70 cm - D: 43 cm A similar sloping secretary, stamped BVRB (for Bernard Van Riesen Burgh), but decorated with gilded bronzes and from the former Widener collection, is now in the National Gallery in Washington. Another example was sold in Paris, Beaussant-Lefèvre, on October 24, 2018, lot 100.
