Amazing sword with a strong double-curved blade. - Lot 245
Amazing sword with a strong double-curved blade. L : 75 cm, blade 62 cm The blade is reminiscent of the Ottoman yatagans. However, the double curvature of this one is much more pronounced than that of the Ottoman examples and would be close to the Armenian yatagans or Black Sea blades (sometimes called "laz bishaq" - literally "Laz knife" in Turkish). On both sides of the blade is engraved a frieze of tulips similar to the style found on Iznik or Safavid ceramics. The handle is made of two riveted horn plates and a copper alloy bolster (the second bolster is missing). The shape of the handle is reminiscent of the Kabylian saber called "flissa". This sword is undoubtedly of great antiquity, but without a similar example referenced, it is difficult to place in time and space. Asia Minor ? Early Ottoman period ? Ottoman Algeria ?
