Saif Arab sword (shamshir in Persian) - Lot 240
Saif Arab sword (shamshir in Persian) Sultanate of Oman or Arabian Peninsula, 19th century. L : 94 cm, blade : 74,5 cm Magnificent Persian blade in damascus steel (wootz) of great quality. On one side of the blade is engraved a lion (a symbol frequently found on Persian blades of the 18th and 19th centuries) as well as the inscription "یا قاضی الحاجات:" "Oh wish-fulfillerer" which is one of the ways to name God. On the other side is engraved, with beautiful calligraphy, "ماشاالله لا حول ولا قوه الا بالله العلي العظيم" which can be translated as "Praise be to God, there is no power or strength except Allâh the Almighty". Handle made of two ivory plates, a silver wire braid and a silver pommel embossed with floral motifs as is also the scabbard's buckle. Steel guard. Wooden scabbard covered with black leather with motifs worked according to the embossing technique. Presence of two steel suspension rings and a silver bouterolle embossed with floral motifs. For a saber similar to this one, but with a gold pommel, braided handle thread and a silver bouterolle as on our saber, see the saber offered to Pierre Loti by the Imam-Sultan of Muscat around 1900.
