Arab saif (shamshir) sword. 19th century handle and Persian - Lot 241
Arab saif (shamshir) sword. 19th century handle and Persian blade from the first half of the 16th century. L : 90 cm, blade : 77 cm The frame, typically Arab, is probably a Syrian or Iraqi work of the 19th century. It is made of two horn plates each decorated with four steel buttons and surrounded at the base by a silvered copper wire. It is also made of steel elements damascened with silver. Silver plated brass guard. Superb steel blade damascus (wootz) with remains of gilding and finely engraved with a sura of the Koran on both sides and on almost all its length. Back of the blade slightly rounded. Also engraved on the blade, near the guard: The name of Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the prophet, first imam of the Shiites علی یا An attribute of Allah, "the mighty" قوی یا Blade from the late Timurid or early Safavid period. A quite similar blade is mounted on the sword of Sultan Selim I (1466-1520), 9th Ottoman sultan. Saber preserved and exhibited in the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul (Inv. 1/94).
