Lazzaro BALDI (Pistoia 1624 - Rome 1703) The Vision of St. Mary Magdalene of Pazzi. Canvas. 65 x 49 cm Ancient restorations. Lazzaro Baldi is one of the main collaborators of the workshop of Peter of Cortona. Received at the Accademia of Saint Luke in 1652, he obtained his first autonomous commission for the oratory of San Giovanni in Oleo in Rome in 1658. Protected by his compatriot, Pope Clement IX Rospigliosi, he is mainly known for cycles of frescoes and religious paintings in churches in the Italian capital. St. Mary Magdalene of Pazzi entered the Carmelite convent of St. Mary of the Angels in 1582, the same year as the death of St. Teresa of Avila. She imposed numerous penances on herself from a very young age, even going so far as to wear a crown of thorns. Falling dangerously ill, almost dying, she pronounced her perpetual vows on May 17, 1584. After the ceremony, Christ appeared to her, accompanied by the Virgin and Saint Augustine, and gave her a ring symbolizing their alliance.
